Mexican drug lord Balderas arrested

MEXICO CITY, May 21 (UPI) -- Mexico's Ministry of Public Security announced the arrest of drug lord Barragan Gilberto Balderas, who was on the United States' 10 Most Wanted list.

Balderas, a major leader of the Gulf Cartel who is also known as "The Namesake," was arrested Friday during his birthday bash in the border town of Reynosa, near McAllen, Texas, the ministry said in a statement.

Balderas was on the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency's 10 Most Wanted list for his involvement in smuggling drugs into the United States, and the agency had offered a $5 million reward for information leading to his capture.

Two of Balderas' associates, Romeo Eduardo Mejia Gonzalez and Sergio Castanon War, also were captured in the raid, Mexican officials said.
