Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano erupts

REYKJAVIK, Iceland, May 21 (UPI) -- Iceland's Grimsvotn volcano began erupting Saturday, billowing smoke and shaking the ground, the country's Meteorological Office said.

One witness told The Daily Telegraph Grimsvotn, situated under the Vatnajokull glacier in the southeast, delivered a plume of smoke that quickly grew to several thousand feet.

The volcano last erupted in 2004. Scientist told the British newspaper this eruption is expected to be small and likely will not cause anything similar to the travel chaos Europeans experienced during the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in April 2010.

Previous eruptions of Grimsvotn in 1998, 1995 and 1993 lasted from one day to several weeks, the newspaper said.
