Iraqi ministry official killed in attack

BAGHDAD, May 17 (UPI) -- An Iraqi Interior Ministry official was killed Tuesday when gunmen attacked the vehicle in which he was a passenger, officials said.

Al-Sumaria reported the attackers used silenced weapons when they approached the vehicle in the al Amel district in southern Baghdad. The official was not identified.

A police official in Kirkuk province reported the al Huwaija district police chief escaped an assassination attempt, the Iraqi television network said.

Elsewhere, police in Diyala said seven people, including three wanted on terrorism charges, were arrested by security forces in raids conducted throughout the province.

Also, police said a checkpoint in eastern Baquba was fired upon during a missile attack.
