Colombia is criticized by United Nations

BOGOTA, May 11 (UPI) -- A statement issued by a U.N. conference on disaster management criticized Colombia's dealing with natural disasters.

A World Reconstruction Conference statement said the disaster prevention is "not a real priority" for Colombian authorities, Colombia Reports reported Tuesday.

The statement also said Colombian authorities have shown a "lack of interest" in compensating losses caused by natural disasters.

"In big and small disasters, most of the cost of the events are assumed by the poorest of families that often have to do without financial protection mechanisms," the report said.

Colombia has been hit with one of the worst rainy seasons in the history of the country that has claimed the lives of 93 people and has affected more than 2.8 million Colombians

Large parts of the country have been crippled since the rainy season began in the beginning of last year that killed more than 300 people and an estimated $50 million in damage.
