BAGHDAD, May 4 (UPI) -- Iraqi cleric Moqtada Sadr Wednesday announced a rally to show his movement's strength and press for U.S. withdrawal.
The Sadr Front told al-Sumaria TV the May 23 gathering is meant to be peaceful, but threatened to resume operations by its military wing, the Mehdi Army, if American forces remain in Iraq beyond the end of this year.
That is the deadline set under a status of forces agreement signed in 2008, but some factions in Iraq have called for an extension.
