LUQ, Somalia, May 3 (UPI) -- At least eight people were killed in an al-Shabaab ambush of a military convoy in Somalia Tuesday, Shabelle Media Network said.
The dead include people from al-Shabaab and the moderate Somali group Ahlu Sunna Waljama, SMN said, but the Gedo governor of the transitional federal government, Mohammed Abdi Kalil, denied reports that officials of the government or Ahlu Sunna were killed in the raid.
Kalil claimed at least 10 al-Shabaab fighters will killed in the heavy fighting near the village of Maykarebay, including Sheik Fu'ad Mohammed Khalaf, a top official of the U.S.-designated terrorist organization.
Unnamed sources told SMN Abdirashid Janan, the Dolow district commissioner, was hurt in the attack.
Al-Shabaab has not released a statement on the attack, the network said.
Meanwhile, al-Shabaab arrested 16 farmers in southern Somalia who failed to pay the group to support its fight against the interim government and African Union forces in the area, SMN said.
