TEHRAN, May 2 (UPI) -- Iran has delayed the hanging of a Kurdish activist but he "might be executed at any time," his attorney said.
Sherko Moarefi, a political activist, was scheduled to be hanged Sunday but his execution was stayed for a possible judicial review, Khalil Bahramian, one of Moarefi's lawyers in Iran, told Britain's Guardian.
Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch called on Iran to change Moarefi's sentence.
"Sherko is innocent. Enmity with God is a charge for those who have taken up arms against the regime but Moarefi has been a peaceful activist," Bahramian said.
Moarefi, 31, was arrested in October 2008 on suspicion of being a member of Komala, a Kurdish opposition political party. Iran considers Komala a terrorist organization.
Moarefi was sentenced to death after his conviction for "acting against the national security" and moharebeh -- waging war against God, the report said.
Bahramian said he fears Iran might execute Moarefi without notice.
"I have genuine fear that he might be executed at any time. This delay does not mean that his sentence has been halted," Bahramian told the Guardian.
