Mubarak may be transferred to prison

CAIRO, May 1 (UPI) -- Egypt's interior minister made a surprise visit to a prison hospital to see if it is suitable to house ex-President Hosni Mubarak, a security official said.

Mansour al-Essawy inspected Tora prison Saturday night, the Middle East News Agency reported. The agency said a source in the security service said Essawy was checking out the Tora Prison hospital to determine if it would need renovations.

Mubarak, who turns 83 this week, is now being held in a hospital in Sharm-el-Sheik, the Red Sea resort where he had been living since stepping down as president. He had a heart attack during police questioning.

If Mubarak is transferred to Tora Prison, he will join his two sons and many members of his former government, including Prime Minister Ahmed Nazif. Mubarak faces charges of financial corruption, abuse of his power as president and ordering the killing of pro-democracy protesters.
