Earthquake rattles parts of Kazakhstan

ALMATY, Kazakhstan, May 1 (UPI) -- A 5.4-magnitude earthquake shook southeast Kazakhstan, with the epicenter 44 miles northeast of Almaty, its largest city, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

Sunday's quake occurred at a depth of about 12 miles shortly after 3 a.m. There were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.

An officer at the Almaty emergency situations department told RIA Novosti the early morning quake measured 4-magnitude in the city.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Center measured the quake at 5.5-magnitude while the USGS measured it at 4.9.
