William, Kate honored at queen's luncheon

LONDON, April 29 (UPI) -- Queen Elizabeth II hosted a luncheon reception Friday for the newest royal couple, William and Catherine, the duke and duchess of Cambridge.

The world watched William and Kate exchange vows and rings at Westminster Abbey, ride in an open carriage to Buckingham Palace amid cheers and flags, then kiss twice from the palace balcony to roars of approval. But the afternoon wedding reception was held behind closed doors at the palace.

About 650 guests, culled from the 1,900 guests invited to the wedding, were invited to the reception to wish William and Kate well and dine on canapes, sweet treats and champagne and other beverages, the official royal wedding Web site said.

Canape toppings included Cornish crab salad, pressed duck terrine, smoked salmon, quail eggs, goat cheese and an assortment of vegetables.

The wedding cake and a groom's cake of chocolate biscuit also were served at the reception. The eight-tier wedding cake, designed by Fiona Cairns, was made from 17 individual fruit cakes. the Web site said. Adorning it were up to 900 individually iced edible flowers and leaves of 17 varieties.

The groom's cake was created by McVitie's Cake Co. using a royal family recipe at the request of William.

Entertainment was provided by Claire Jones, official harpist to Prince Charles, father of William.
