Hats turn heads at royal wedding

LONDON, April 29 (UPI) -- The royal wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton Friday provided a red-carpet venue for millinery designers in hat fashion-conscious London.

Women at Westminster Abbey's colorful fashions were accented by sometimes over-the-top hats.

Hat designer extraordinaire Philip Treacy designed headgear for a number of women, including Camilla, duchess of Cornwall and William's stepmother. Her hat incorporated a broad, swooping brim and ribbon.

Kate's mother, Carole Middleton, wore a hat designed by Berkshire-based Jane Corbett.

Victoria Beckham, wife of soccer phenom David Beckham and a former Spice Girl, wore a near gravity-defying hat, also designed by Treacy, CNN reported.

The queen's granddaughter, Princess Eugenie, sported a feathered hat while sister Beatrice wore a statement hat of high-sitting intertwined circles in peach.

Tara Palmer-Tomkinson, socialite friend of Prince Charles, wore a Stephen Jones-designed teardrop-shaped hat that nearly touched the bridge of her nose, CNN said.

Prime Minister David Cameron's wife, Samantha Cameron, caused a buzz when she wore a feathery barrette instead of a hat, and was clad in a short-sleeved teal-green dress.
