Musharraf escapes extradition to Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, April 23 (UPI) -- Britain says it can't enforce an arrest warrant against former Pakistan President Perez Musharraf because it has no extradition treaty with Pakistan.

Pakistan wants to talk to the former president, now living in London, about the assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto.

Pakistan's Dawn News said Saturday the British Foreign Office couldn't detain Musharraf because there is no formal extradition agreement between the two countries.

Bhutto was killed Dec. 27, 2007, during Musharraf's presidency. The arrest warrant said Musharraf was suspected of abetment and/or conspiracy in Bhutto's killing.

Asian News International said Pakistan issued three no-bail arrest warrants for Musharraf, but none could be executed. It also quoted a report that said Musharraf was part of a "broad conspiracy" to have Bhutto, his political rival, killed before elections.

The reaction from Musharraf's camp was quick. Attorney Muhammad Ali Saif, a spokesman for Musharraf, said the criminal proceedings against the former president are speculative and one-sided.

Pakistan's new minister of information and broadcasting, Firdous Ashiq Awan, hinted the government might ask for the help of Interpol in returning Musharraf to Pakistan.
