JERUSALEM, April 22 (UPI) -- Israel must present its own Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, President Shimon Peres said Friday in response to a reported new American initiative.
"If we don't want others to plan for us, we should do it ourselves," he said, The Jerusalem Post reported. "If we do it, other people won't. The problem isn't to propose a peace plan, but to actually make peace."
On Wednesday, The New York Times reported that President Barack Obama's advisers are drafting an Israeli-Palestinian peace proposal. It is reported to call for a Palestinian state with its capital in East Jerusalem.
In a television interview with PBS Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton urged an immediate resumption of peace talks. She also opposed Palestinian efforts to have the United Nations declare a state within the pre-1967 borders.
