Medvedev: Stronger corruption law needed

MOSCOW, April 22 (UPI) -- Russia needs to ramp up its fight against corruption, President Dmitry Medvedev said Friday, speaking at a conference on encouraging investment.

The president called for legislation to give prosecutors new tools but also warned against going too far, RIA Novosti reported.

"I think we do need additional instruments for considering complaints," Medvedev said. "But this document must be drafted in such a way that would not paralyze the work of honest officials."

In its 2009 Corruption Perception Index, Transparency International ranked Russia 146th of 180 countries. The group, based in Berlin, ranked Libya higher than Russia.
