Two photojournalists die in Libya

MISURATA, Libya, April 20 (UPI) -- Photojournalists Tim Hetherington, known for the Afghan war documentary "Restrepo," and Chris Hondros of Getty Images died in Libya Wednesday, colleagues said.

Two other photojournalists were wounded in the incident in Misurata -- Guy Martin, who suffered a severe pelvic wound, and Michael Christopher Brown, who suffered less severe shrapnel wounds to his left shoulder, The New York Times reported.

Cathy Saypol, president of CSPR, the agency that represented Hetherington, said details were scarce.

"The only thing we know is that he was hit by an RPG [rocket-propelled grenade] with the other guys," Saypol said.

CNN said the last Twitter message Hetherington sent appeared to have been Tuesday.

"In besieged Libyan city of Misrata. indiscriminate shelling by Qaddafi forces. No sign of NATO," he wrote.

Libya is in the midst of a civil war that began in February, with rebels battling forces loyal to dictator Moammar Gadhafi for control of the North African country.

Hetherington, a British-born New Yorker, received an Academy Award nomination this year for "Restrepo," a documentary he co-directed with journalist Sebastian Junger.
