Forces report capture, deaths of militants

KABUL, Afghanistan, April 13 (UPI) -- Afghan and coalition forces killed more than 10 Taliban militants and arrested others while clearing a safe haven in Faryab province, military officials said.

The operation in the village of Tez Nawa, conducted Monday and Tuesday, cleared a suspected sanctuary believed to be involved in improvised explosive device activity and a location for a weapons cache, the International Security Assistance Force said Wednesday in a release.

The coalition said security forces encountered armed insurgents as they prepared to leave Tuesday. The operation concluded with more than 10 insurgents dead and numerous suspected insurgents detained.

The ISAF Wednesday confirmed Mullah Alem, the former leader of the Taliban Commission for Faryab province, was killed during an operation in the province's Bal Chiragh district Tuesday.

Other suspected Taliban militants were arrested in operations conducted throughout Afghanistan, the ISAF said.
