CAIRO, April 11 (UPI) -- Ousted former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak and his two sons, all under house arrest in Sharm el-Sheik, have been ordered to appear before a prosecutor.
Egyptian Prosecutor General Abdel Meguid Mahmoud summoned Mubarak and sons Alaa and Gamal to return to Cairo to answer to charges of corruption, Bikya Masr reported Monday.
Mubarak and his family members allegedly abused their political power to accumulate "illegal personal profits, illegal amassing of wealth and the seizure of public funds," the report said.
They are banned from traveling and their assets have been frozen.
The order to appear before the prosecutor followed the broadcast of a Mubarak speech Sunday on the al-Arabiya news channel in which he said Egypt's interim government is attempting to tarnish his reputation and that of his family.
"I cannot keep silent facing this continued falsified campaign and the continued attempt to undermine my reputation and the reputation of my family," Mubarak said in the audio-only speech.
Mubarak says he has no hidden money and that he did not steal anything from Egypt or its people. He invited the prosecutor to "take all the proper legal steps to reveal" whether he has any assets outside Egypt.
A million-person march Friday demanded a speedy trial for the former president and his aides and bemoaned the slow pace of investigations by the Egyptian military.
