MILTON, Ontario, April 8 (UPI) -- A Canadian woman who cheated donors by claiming to have cancer has been sentenced to 10 months of house arrest.
Ashley Kirilow, 23, of Burlington, Ontario, was sentenced Thursday to the house arrest term followed by five months under a 10 p.m.-6 a.m. curfew, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.
She will then serve two years' probation and be forbidden to solicit funds for any charity.
Kirilow admitted one count of fraud under $5,000 in a Milton, Ontario, court Thursday, having already pleaded guilty to one count of fraud over $5,000 in November.
Kirilow, posing in photos with a shaved head and eyebrows, sought donations online, claiming she would send the funds to a cancer charity. Over 18 months, she took in about $12,000, prosecutors said.
Kirilow is in the psychiatric ward at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, being treated for depression and personality disorder, The Hamilton (Ontario) Spectator reported.
The scam was exposed after she entered the mental unit and her father revealed the truth.
