President Arroyo's son faces tax charge

MANILA, Philippines, April 8 (UPI) -- The son of former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo and his wife have been charged with tax evasion.

The Bureau of Internal Revenue said Thursday that Rep. Juan Miguel "Mikey" Arroyo and Angela Arroyo failed to file income tax returns for some of the years between 2002 and 2009, The Manila Times reports. The couple could face as much as 10 years in prison if convicted.

Investigators said the couple underreported their income by at least 30 percent in three of the years in question.

Arroyo said he is not getting due process from tax officials.

"It comes to a surprise to me that they filed a case against me right away without due notice," he said. "I got the letter of audit two days ago saying that I have 10 days to explain these issues. It's been just two days and they filed a case against me. They are not giving me the due process as provided by the Constitution."

He said his congressional salary is his only source of income and taxes are automatically withheld before he gets a paycheck.
