Most Swedes sober for first sex

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 8 (UPI) -- Three out of four Swedes say they were sober when they had sex for the first time, a study on the sexual habits of Swedes age 15 to 29 found.

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg reported just 25 percent of those surveyed said they were under the influence of alcohol or other drugs when they lost their virginity or during their most recent sexual encounter.

Researcher Jonna Abelsson said she wasn't necessarily surprised that the majority of young Swedes abstained from alcohol when they decide to have sex.

"They haven't taken alcohol, cannabis, or other drugs. We also see that they describe their debut in positive words," Abelsson told the TT news agency. "They want to do it again."

"It's also the case that the majority of respondents say they were together with a steady partner the last time they had sex. That can also explain why they were sober."

The study did indicate, however, that people younger than 25 were more likely to be drunk when having sex than those more than 25 years of age.
