Spy probe dropped by Swedish investigator

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, April 4 (UPI) -- Tomas Lindstrand, Sweden's chief public prosecutor, says he has dropped a preliminary investigation into the U.S. Embassy's Surveillance Detection Unit.

Lindstradt wanted to determine if the SDU violated any Swedish laws, but he said he was unable to obtain enough information to substantiate allegations of unlawful intelligence gathering, The Local reported Monday.

"We've not been able to investigate those who work with or have worked with the SDU because their observations are considered to be part of the embassy's archives and are inviolable," Lindstrand said. "We're not allowed to look at them. We can't do anything about it."

The U.S. Embassy said the SDU's purpose is to uncover surveillance directed against the embassy.

Lindstrand said based on information he obtained from Swedish law enforcement and military agencies, he found nothing to indicate the SDU's activities were illegal.

"It looks perfectly normal if you look at the memorandums and reports," Lindstrand said.

The U.S. Embassy welcomed Lindstrand's decision to end his investigation.

"We're pleased with the results of the inquiry, which we feel show that we've done our best to cooperate with the Swedish authorities on this matter," embassy spokesperson Chris Dunnett said.
