KORONADAL CITY, Philippines, April 3 (UPI) -- Four Filipino miners died when a landslide resulting from heavy rainfall hit the gold mining area in which they were working, officials said.
Two other miners were rescued after the landslide hit the mine in the village of Pulabato in South Cotabato Saturday during a heavy downpour, the Philippine Daily Enquirer reported Sunday.

Tampakan vice mayor Relly Leysa said the victims were sluice miners extracting particles of gold from large volumes of dirt by dumping water on the soil. The gold settles out as the dirt and water cascades down the sluice.
Global miner Xstrata Plc. has a $5.9 billion copper-gold project in Tampakan.
