Japan's radioactive materials now in Spain

BARCELONA, Spain, April 1 (UPI) -- Several radiation monitoring stations throughout Spain have recorded slight increases in the concentration of iodine and cesium in the air coming from Japan.

Spain's Council for Nuclear Safety (CSN) detected the increase of materials in Barcelona in the northeast, Bilbao in the north, Caceres in the west and Seville in the southwest with levels ranging from 0.9 to 0.002 millibecquerels per cubic meter.

Representatives of the CSN describe the values as very low with no potentially harmful effects on people's health or the environment, ThinkSpain reported on Friday.

A massive earthquake in March caused an ongoing release of radioactive materials from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the air and water.

Other European countries have reported similar increases over the same period of time because of dispersion and meteorological data from previous days.

Spain's CSN will continue to monitor the situation in Japan in coordination with international agencies.
