Japan prepared to accept help

TOKYO, March 30 (UPI) -- Japan is getting expert help from France and the United States at the Fukushima nuclear plant, the government's top spokesman said Wednesday.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, said the United States, with its large military presence in Japan, is critical to finding long-term solutions to the plant's problems.

The reactors at Fukushima were damaged by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

"We have made considerable efforts to set up a structure where we can tap into the knowledge and expertise accumulated among people both in Japan and around the world," Edano said. "If we can use it well, we should be able to overcome our problems."

French President Nicolas Sarkozy was scheduled to arrive in Japan Thursday.
