14 soldiers, officers killed

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, March 28 (UPI) -- Militants ambushed a Pakistani military convoy near the border with Afghanistan, killing 12 soldiers and two officers, sources told Dawn newspaper.

The attack occurred Monday night in the Akakhel area of Pakistan's Khyber Agency. Those killed were members of the country's Frontier Corps paramilitary force, the report said.

The sources told the newspaper the military convoy was returning to its base in Malwat from Shindand when it was attacked.

A senior official was quoted as saying the soldiers died in an accidental blast but the newspaper's sources said 12 soldiers, a colonel and a captain died in an exchange of fire after the ambush. It was not clear how many militants, f any, died in the fighting.

The report said Pakistani security forces have been operating in the area to flush out militant groups.
