Australia limits Japanese food imports

CANBERRA, Australia, March 24 (UPI) -- Australia has ordered a ban on food imports from parts of Japan affected by radiation contamination from the earthquake-damaged Fukushima nuclear plant.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand imposed the food imports ban from four prefectures around the stricken Fukushima plant following the Japanese government restrictions on some agricultural products from the region.

FSANZ said the risk to Australian consumers is negligible because only seaweed and seafood are currently imported from Japan but the order will also cover other foods such as milk and milk products, fresh fruit and vegetables.

The affected prefectures are Fukushima, Gunma, Ibaraki and Tochigi.

The ban follows similar restrictions placed on Japanese food imports by the United States, Canada, Hong Kong and the United Kingdom.
