Seven charged in power plant accident

MOSCOW, March 23 (UPI) -- Charges have been filed against seven officials in connection with an accident at a Russian hydroelectric plant that killed 75 people, an investigator said.

Vladimir Markin, a member of the panel that looked into the 2009 disaster at the Sayano-Shushenskaya electricity generating plant, said those charged violated safety and labor rules, ITAR-Tass reported Wednesday.

The plant, located in Khakassia, Russia, is the world's largest hydroelectric producer.

The seven people charged are the plant's former director and six current or former engineers.

The Investigation Committee poured through 1,500 volumes and identified 162 persons as injured parties before issuing its findings, said ITAR-Tass.

The accident at Sayano-Shushenskaya occurred when one of the plant turbines broke apart flooding the hall and engine room.

In addition to the 75 deaths, 85 workers suffered injuries.
