Iraq ministry official attacked, killed

BAGHDAD, March 23 (UPI) -- Gunmen using silencer-equipped weapons killed an Iraqi Interior Ministry official as he was driving his vehicle in Sadr City in eastern Baghdad, police said.

Police said two of the unidentified official's security guards were wounded in the attack Tuesday, al-Sumaria reported Wednesday.

Elsewhere in Iraq, protests escalated into bloody, deadly confrontations between demonstrators and Kurdish security forces in Sulaimaniah, officials said.

A member of the security force was killed and 10 people -- mostly protesters -- were wounded, police told the news service.

The clashes Tuesday erupted in the city's Halabja district were the first in about two weeks, officials said.
