YOKOSUKA, Japan, March 11 (UPI) -- U.S. military facilities experienced power outages and evacuations but no damage to ships from Japan's earthquake and tsunami Friday, the Pentagon said.
An 8.9-magnitude earthquake struck off the east coast of Japan Friday, triggering a deadly tsunami and aftershocks, some of which registered above a magnitude of 7.
The Maritime Patrol and Reconnaissance Force headquarters in Misawa was briefly evacuated, the Defense Department said in a release. The facility lost power and was operating from a generator.
The Amphibious Force headquarters in White Beach, Okinawa, moved its watch to higher ground at Kadena Air Base as a precaution against the tsunami, officials said.
No damage was reported to ships in port in Yokosuka, Japan, the headquarters of the 7th fleet, although line handlers adjusted the lines from the vessels to the docks to account for water-level changes, the Defense Department said.
Ships in Guam were directed to leave, if possible, or recall personnel and adjust lines during changes in sea level.
