Hit man enters Nepal jail, shoots inmate

KATHMANDU, Nepal, March 11 (UPI) -- A hired killer walked into a Nepali jail and wounded a TV executive being held there, police said Friday.

Mohammed Yunus Ansari, who is being held on counterfeiting and drug trafficking charges, was wounded in the shoulder Thursday and is in stable condition, the BBC reported.

The gunman, named as Jasjeet Singh from India's Punjab, was arrested at the scene, the heavily guarded Central Prison in Kathmandu. He had been scanned with a metal detector and searched but hid the gun in his pants, said Police Commissioner Arjun Jung Shahi.

The gunman told police he was promised 1.5 million Indian rupees ($33,152) to assassinate Ansari, Shahi said. Police are hunting two accomplices, believed to be Indian.

The gunman got into the prison on the pretext of visiting Charles Sobhraj, who is in the prison for murdering an American backpacker. He is accused in several Asian countries of killing more than 20 Western hikers in the 1970s.

"We are investigating whether Sobhraj has a link to this incident," Shahi said.
