EDMONTON, Alberta, March 10 (UPI) -- The owner of a trained fighting pit bull that savagely attacked a small dog in Edmonton last year has been fined and ordered to pay damages by an Alberta judge.
City bylaw officer Shawn Beskowiney told the provincial court after the June 21 attack at a condominium complex, he learned the pit bull had been trained in "cage-fighting," but was running loose when it attacked a smaller dog.
The owner of the pit bull, which was euthanized after being declared "unadoptable," didn't appear in court Wednesday.
The judge ordered 30-year-old Shannon Gouda-Okeynan to pay a $1,000 fine for a dog attack causing injury and a $500 fine for failing to muzzle or leash her dog, the Edmonton Sun reported.
She was also ordered to pay $2,465 in damages to the owner of the year-old smaller dog, which survived a punctured jugular vein and a shredded ear, the report said.
Prosecutors had asked for higher fines, but the judge said he wanted to ensure Gouda-Okeynan could afford to pay the restitution, the Sun said.
