MADRID, March 8 (UPI) -- Deputy Spanish Prime Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba is hospitalized for a urinary tract infection following a prostate biopsy, a government spokeswoman said.
Rubalcaba, 59, was admitted into Madrid's Gregorio Maranon Hospital Sunday, suffering from a high fever, which is believed to have been caused by a cold, ABC Espana reported.
Dr. Carlos Hernandez Fernandez said Rubalcaba was transferred to intensive care because his fever persisted.
"A prostate biopsy logically has its risks despite precautionary measures such as providing antibiotics, and in a certain percentage of cases complications in the form of infections may arise," he told radio Onda Cero.
The biopsy ruled out cancer, an interior ministry statement said.
Rubalcaba was "doing better" Tuesday, the spokeswoman said.
