American convicted in Cuba

HAVANA, March 5 (UPI) -- American Alan Gross has been convicted in Cuba for illegally arranging Internet connections in the Communist island nation, the BBC reported Saturday.

The British news network said Cuban television reported the 61-year-old U.S. aid worker was found guilty of crimes against the state after a two-day trial. He faces up to 20 years in prison when he is sentenced, the BBC said.

Gross, a contract worker for the U.S. Agency for International development, was arrested in December 2009.

He can appeal his sentence.
