U.S. contractor refuses to cooperate

LAHORE, Pakistan, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Raymond Davis, the American jailed for killing two Pakistanis, refused to sign a charging document Friday, asserting diplomatic immunity, a lawyer said.

The U.S. government supports his claim. Davis is a contractor working for the CIA, officials say.

Davis first would not sign because the document was in Urdu, lawyer Asad Manzoor Butt told ABC News. After it was translated, he presented the court with a claim for diplomatic immunity.

U.S. officials have said they fear for Davis's safety. One senior official told ABC the sentiment of ordinary Pakistanis is "Let's take him and hang him."

Pakistani officials say he is being held safely with dogs tasting his food to guard against poison. Guards in the jail area where he is held are not armed.

Davis shot two men to death on a Lahore street Jan. 27. He says they were trying to rob him and he acted in self-defense.

U.S. officials originally said Davis was a diplomat but have since acknowledged he is a private contractor working for the CIA.
