Dogs recovering from gunshot wounds

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- Two Canadian dogs shot in the head in separate incidents are recovering at a Saskatchewan rescue shelter, officials said.

Tiffiny Koback, director of the Saskatoon Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said it is uncommon for the shelter to take in dogs that survived gunshot wounds to the head, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported Friday.

"It's a miracle for both of them," Koback said.

She said one of the dogs, dubbed Blue by the shelter staff, was shot during a cull of feral dogs in Pelican Narrows and was found to have survived his wound two days later.

"A portion of his lower mandible [jaw] had to be removed as it was shattered from a shotgun shell," Koback said.

The other canine, given the name Indigo Annie, was found injured in a ditch near the city of Clavet.

"The puppy ... was found to have been shot in the head by what is believed to have been a handgun. Indigo Annie sustained a hairline fracture to the mandible and hemorrhaging to one eye," Koback said.

"This little girl is very lucky in that it appears that she will not need surgery at this time and has a good prognosis."
