RAMALLAH, West Bank, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- An official of the Palestinian Authority has accused Hamas of selling its soul to other countries.

Foreign Affairs Minister Dr. Riyad al-Malki made the statement in an exclusive interview with The Media Line published Wednesday.

"Hamas has sold its spirit and its independence to other countries," he said. "I'm referring to Iran in particular."

Al-Maliki said Hamas allowed countries like Iran and others to intervene and influence internal Palestinian affairs and decisions.

He said the fact that Hamas doesn't want to recognize the Palestine Liberation Organization as the sole legitimate representative of the Palestinian people presents a major problem.

However, al-Maliki said he views elections as the solution to the problem.

"Hamas does not want elections because Hamas fears that the outcome of elections will not put it in the government seat," al-Maliki said.

He said Hamas must be convinced to become a Palestinian political party concerned with Palestinian affairs.

"When this happens, then the reconciliation becomes a possibility," al-Maliki said.
