Amnesty International: Cuba harasses family

HAVANA, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- The Cuban government has been harassing the family of a human-rights activist who died a year ago Wednesday on a hunger strike, Amnesty International says.

Reina Luisa Tamayo, whose son, Orlando Zapato Tamayo, died in a Havana prison, told the group she was arrested and threatened. She said state security agents told her she should drop plans to honor her son Wednesday and stay away from the cemetery where he is buried.

Tamayo said she and her husband were held for 12 hours last week, while Daniel Mesa, another activist who had been with them, spent more than two days in custody.

"The fact that the Cuban authorities have so far failed to initiate an investigation into Orlando's death is outrageous and preventing his family from properly celebrating his life is a scandal," said Javier Zuniga, special adviser at Amnesty International.
