Soldiers sentenced in Congo mass rape

BARAKA, Democratic Republic of Congo, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- A military court in the Democratic Republic of Congo sentenced four officers and five other soldiers to prison for the mass rape of women on New Year's Day.

Lt. Col. Kibibi Mutware was found guilty of crimes against humanity for ordering his troops to rape, beat and loot the population of Fizi and sentenced to 20 years, CNN reported.

CNN said it is the first conviction of a commanding officer for rape in eastern Congo.

Three other officers were also given 20-year sentences and five soldiers were sentenced to between 10 and 15 years.

A number of women from the lakeside village of Baraka testified in the case.
