Toronto doctors accused in 2nd attack

TORONTO, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- A bail hearing for two Toronto doctors charged with drugging and sexually assaulting a woman was postponed pending allegations of another attack.

Amitabh Chauhan of Ancaster and Suganthan Kayilasanathan, of Markham, both 32, were returned to their cells Saturday, as there was not enough time to investigate the new accusations, the Toronto Sun and CityNews.ca reported.

The prosecutor suggested it would be best to have a bond hearing that would deal with all the complaints at once, the newspaper and news Web site reported.

The allegations about the second incident are against only one of the men, but officials declined to say which one, the Sun and CityNews.ca reported.

The doctors were charged with gang sexual assault and administering a noxious thing.

The pair allegedly met a woman, 23, who knew one of the men, at a bar in a Toronto hotel to discuss career guidance. They went to a second bar, where the woman alleges an unknown substance was put in her drink. She was then allegedly taken back to the hotel and sexually assaulted by both men.

Because they are practicing physicians with access to various types of drugs, "I'm concerned there may be more victims," said police Detective Dan Luff.

Chauhan is a member of the plastic surgery department at Hamilton's McMaster University. Kayilasanathan is a family doctor with an independent practice.

The Globe and Mail said their bail hearing was adjourned until Wednesday morning. The doctors are expected to plead innocent.

Attorney Sean Robichaud, who represents Chauhan, said his client "looks forward to contesting these allegations in court when the time comes."
