Britain moving toward same-sex marriage

LONDON, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Gay couples in Britain who want to form civil partnerships may now do so in church if they wish, the government announced Thursday.

Equalities Minister Lynne Featherstone said the coalition government is also considering rewriting the law on marriage. That would probably change the definition of marriage to include same-sex couples by erasing the differences between marriage and civil partnerships.

Featherstone is a Liberal Democrat, the party that is the junior partner in the government with the Conservatives.

"I am delighted that same-sex partners will now be able to hold their civil partnerships in religious buildings and that the Coalition will look at what the next steps for civil partnerships will be," she said.
