LONDON, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- British Defense Secretary Liam Fox Tuesday called e-mail notifications of dismissal to 38 long-serving warrant officers "an appalling mistake."

At least one of the group was serving with the Royal Tank Regiment in Afghanistan when he got the notice that he will be out of the military in 12 months, The Guardian reported. All are serving under rolling contracts known as Versatile Engagement Long Career and would normally have learned of major changes in their status through their commanding officers.

"I think that there has been an appalling mistake," Fox said, responding to questions in the House of Commons. "I know that the individual concerned will be absolutely mortified that this has occurred."

The Army issued a statement saying that commanding officers have now spoken to all the soldiers who got e-mailed notices "to ensure that they get all necessary advice and support."

The Ministry of Defense also planned to dismiss 100 trainee Royal Air Force pilots.
