LONDON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- One of the crooks who pulled off the Great Train Robbery of 1963 was taken to a London hospital Thursday after falling ill, his son said.
Ronnie Biggs, 81, was taken to the hospital from the nursing home where he was staying since being transferred there from prison last year due to health problems, Britain's Sky News reported.
"He has been taken to the hospital. We do not know if it is a suspected stroke or what it is," said Biggs's son, Michael. "They are going to do a CT scan. He is conscious at the moment. The CT scan will find out whether it is to do with an infection or another stroke."
Biggs was in a gang that robbed a Glasgow, Scotland-to-London mail train, stealing $4.17 million -- worth several times that in today's dollars -- most of which was never recovered.
He was caught, convicted and received a 30-year prison sentence, but escaped from Wandsworth Prison in 1965 after serving 15 months, Sky News said.
He went on the lam for more than 30 years, residing in Spain, Australia and Brazil before voluntarily returning to England, Sky News reported.
