Egypt protests Turkey's remarks

CAIRO, Feb. 8 (UPI) -- Egypt Tuesday protested Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's calls for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to resign, officials said.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit wrote to Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu, advising Ankara not to meddle in Egypt's affairs, The Jerusalem Post reported Tuesday.

The Post said Gheit asked Turkey to refrain from publishing further statements on the situation in Egypt saying it could harm relations between the two countries.

Egypt has been wracked by nearly two weeks of anti-government protests.

Erdogan Monday, returning to Turkey from a visit to Damascus, told reporters Israel must not interfere in what is happening in Egypt, the Hurriyet Daily News & Economic Review reported.
