Issoufou, Oumarou in Niger runoff

NIAMEY, Niger, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- Opposition leader Mahamadou Issoufou will face former Niger Prime Minister Seini Oumarou in a runoff, election results indicate.

Election commission leader Gousmane Abdourahamane said the two would face each other in March, noting full results from January's first round of elections would be released soon, the BBC reported Friday.

Oumarou served as prime minister under Mamadou Tandja, who was ousted by the army in 2010 amid criticism for seeking a third term. Military ruler Salou Djibo said he would hand power to an elected leader before April.

The BBC said Oumarou should be backed by a broad coalition, including backers of Hama Amadou, who finished third in January.

In October, Niger voters passed a new constitution that reduces the powers of future presidents and limits them to two terms.
