Serbia sees progress in EU negotiations

BELGRADE, Serbia, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- The European Union's enlargement commissioner says Serbia is making progress on membership requirements, but it will take time, Radio B92 reported.

Stefan Fule said in Belgrade while Serbia was making progress in many areas, it remained critical it cooperate with turning over two Serbian fugitives from the Yugoslav wars in the 1990s, the report said.

The Hague international tribunal has outstanding warrants for former Gen. Ratko Mladic and Goran Hadzic, who led a group to create a Serb republic in Croatia.

"It is important that … recommendations are taken seriously and that political will transfers to concrete operations in order to bring these two fugitives to justice," Fule told reporters.

However, he said documentation of Serbia's steps toward EU accession was showing promise.

"We have started studying hundreds of thousands of pages," he said. "Nobody expects Serbia to do this enormous work in a few months."
