Man's extradition in wife's death delayed

LONDON, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- A British man's extradition to South Africa on charges of arranging his wife's murder on their honeymoon has been put off.

The City of Westminster Magistrates' Court in London adjourned the proceedings until Feb. 8 after being told Thursday Shrien Dewani was suffering from acute stress, the BBC reported.

Anni Dewani, 28, was shot Nov. 13 when the couple's taxi was hijacked in the Gugulethu township in Cape Town.

A South African court sentenced taxi driver Zola Tongo, 31, to 18 years for murder in December, and Xolile Mnguni, 23, and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, 25, are to be tried later.

Tongo told the Western Cape High Court he was offered 15,000 rand ($2,100) to kill the woman.

Dewani, 31, was excused from attending the hearing after a psychiatrist diagnosed him with acute stress and depression. He denies any involvement in the killing.

Attorney Ben Watson, representing South Africa, said authorities believe Dewani plotted with the others to make it "appear as if they had both been the victims of a random hijacking."
