MADRID, Jan. 18 (UPI) -- Accused Nazi war criminal John Demjanjuk has been indicted by the Spanish Supreme Court on genocide and crimes against humanity charges.
The court on Jan. 14 made public its request of a week earlier for an international arrest warrant for Demjanjuk, a 90-year-old man living in the Cleveland area, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency reported Monday.
The Spanish court in Madrid has accused Demjanjuk of responsibility for the deaths of 50 to 155 Spanish prisoners in a World War II German concentration camp at Flossenberg.
Spain has a legal doctrine of universal jurisdiction, which means it may bring to trial human rights crimes even if they didn't take place on Spanish land, the JTA said.
Demjanjuk is currently on trial in Munich, Germany, on charges of accessory to the 1943 murder of 27,900 Jews in the Sobibor death camp, the JTA reported.
Spain has asked that Demjanjuk be extradited to Spain after his trial in Germany, the JTA reported.
Demjanjuk's Munich trial started Nov. 30, but has been postponed several times due to his poor health.
