Woman 'scalped' when hair caught in pool

KRISTINEHAMN, Sweden, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- A Swedish woman said part of her scalp was torn off when the floor of a swimming pool was suddenly lowered and her hair got caught in a pool-edge grate.

Anna Brattstrom was in the children's pool with her 2-year-old daughter on her lap when the incident occurred, the Swedish new agency TT and the Swedish newspaper The Local reported Monday.

"It hurts and I cannot bend over. It hurts down to my neck," Brattstrom said after having surgery at a hospital.

As the floor was lowered, Brattstrom's hair got caught in a grate and a large chunk of hair and skin were ripped away.

"First, I thought that someone had attacked me. Later, I thought that something had exploded. When I came to my senses, I stood up in the pool and then I could feel my head. It was not just hair but a large portion of skin that had been ripped off," the woman, who has waist-length hair, said.

The hospital transplanted skin from Brattstrom's groin to her scalp, the news sources reported.

Pool officials said they would report the incident to police. Pool manager Joanna Carlsson apologized and said she wants to meet with the injured woman to know what happened and to clear up the issue of compensation.
