BRISBANE, Australia, Jan. 14 (UPI) -- Residents of a flooded Brisbane, Australia, suburb say they're worried by unconfirmed sightings of bull sharks swimming in inundated streets.
City Councilor Paul Tully said a Goodna resident reported a shark swimming around shops Thursday morning, The Sydney Morning Herald reported.
"This isn't the kind of man to lie," Tully said. "He said he saw a shark swimming around the shopping center here and I believe him.
"To have a shark in the main street of Goodna, well, that's probably something that's never happened before."
The possibility of bull sharks in deep or steady pockets of muddy floodwaters was not unlikely, Trevor Long, director of marine services at SeaWorld, said.
In early summer, mother bull sharks swim into the backwaters of the Brisbane River to give birth to their pups, which range in size from 2 feet to 5 feet, he said.
"There's a chance that there could be baby bull sharks in the waters though they'd be well out of the rapid current, seeking out still pockets of shelter and food," Long said.
"I wouldn't be too concerned but just keep in mind that they float to the surface to feed at night so I would be steering clear of those kind of waters then."
