5-hour siege at London's Regent Street

LONDON, Jan. 13 (UPI) -- London's famous Regent Street shopping thoroughfare reopened Thursday after a predawn, 5-hour standoff with a man in a store who claimed to have a bomb.

Police cleared a large area around Regent Street, well known to tourists and Londoners alike, including many pubs, clubs and parts of Oxford Street and Piccadilly Circus and their London Underground rapid-transit stations.

The unidentified 46-year-old man, who broke into an Accessorize fashion-accessories shop around 12:20 a.m., threatened to blow himself up but gave up without a struggle at 5:15 a.m. and was arrested, police said.

Police did not say if he actually had explosives with him, The Daily Telegraph reported. They also did not say why he broke into the shop.
